Taking your child to the dentist for the first time is a special milestone! At North Shore Smiles Pediatric Dentistry, we know it can be both exciting and a little nerve-wracking for parents. Here’s what to expect and how to make it a positive experience! 🦷✨

The ABCs of Your Child’s First Dental Visit
We recommend scheduling your child’s first dental visit when their first tooth erupts or by their first birthday, whichever comes first. Early visits are essential for establishing a friendly relationship with the dentist and for monitoring your child’s dental development from the start. These visits help your child feel comfortable with check-ups and build a foundation for lifelong healthy habits.

At North Shore Smiles Pediatric Dentistry, we focus on creating a welcoming and relaxed environment for your child. During their first visit, our friendly team will introduce them to the dental chair, instruments, and our staff in a fun, easy way.
Dr. Tiana will perform a quick, gentle examination to assess your child’s oral health, track dental development, and address any concerns. We’ll also teach age-appropriate brushing and flossing techniques to keep those little smiles bright and healthy! 🪥

Tips to Prepare Your Child
📚📺 Share Stories + Shows
Reading books like The Berenstain Bears Visit the Dentist or Peppa Pig Goes to the Dentist and watching dentist episodes of Dora the Explorer or Daniel Tiger’s Neighborhood helps kids feel comfortable with the idea (check out our full list of stories and shows below!).
👍 Talking About the Dentist: Keep It Positive!
When talking about the dentist with your child, keep the tone light and friendly. Avoid phrases like “If you don’t brush, you’ll have to go to the dentist” or “If you have a cavity, you’ll need a shot.” While well-meaning, these types of comments can create fear and make the dentist seem like a punishment.
Instead, explain that the dentist helps keep teeth healthy and strong so they can smile, eat, and grow! Maintaining an upbeat attitude helps build excitement and reduces anxieties.
👶 Explain What They’ll See
A two-year-old may not understand much dental jargon, but you can talk to them about the cool “toothbrushes” and mirrors they’ll see. Describe the dentist as a friend who checks teeth and makes them sparkle! ✨ Check out our Instagram account for videos and pictures you can share with your child prior to visiting to show them our welcoming waiting room and office along with friendly videos of Dr. Tiana, our hygienists, and our reception staff.
🧸 Bring a Favorite Comfort Item
To ease any anxiety, consider bringing a favorite comfort item, like a stuffed animal or blanket, to help your child feel secure. A familiar item can make the environment feel a little more like home and give them something to hold onto for extra reassurance.
🪥 Practice at Home
Make brushing and “pretend dental visits” fun at home. Try a game where you check your child’s teeth and let them “check” yours. Little routines like this make the dental office feel familiar and safe.
